Generation Lab’s “Young Blood” Drug Claim Faces an Evidence Test

Generation Lab says two existing drugs can mimic the effects of plasma exchange, but the ingredients remain secret and controlled human evidence is still pending.

Generation Lab says it has developed an injectable combination of two existing drugs that can reproduce some of the rejuvenating effects associated with plasma exchange—without exchanging blood or plasma. The treatment, called 1 Generation, is being promoted as a way to counter harmful age-related signals in the bloodstream and restore the body’s capacity for repair.

The claim is supported so far by laboratory work and anecdotal reports from a small group of insiders, not by results from a large clinical trial. The company also has not publicly identified the two drugs, making it difficult for independent experts to evaluate the proposed treatment’s safety, biological mechanism or likelihood of success.

What Generation Lab is claiming

Generation Lab describes 1 Generation as a weekly injectable treatment that simultaneously stimulates cellular regeneration and neutralizes factors associated with aging in the blood. Scientific founder Irina Conboy says the combination allows human cells to remain youthful even when exposed to serum from older people.

Conboy, CEO Alina Su, Conboy’s husband and research collaborator Michael Conboy, and physician Matt Cook are among the people reported to have taken the combination. The company has circulated anecdotal observations including:

  • Improved vision
  • More energy for landscaping and badminton
  • Increased hand-grip strength
  • Improved sexual function
  • More frequent bowel movements
  • Greater mental clarity and general well-being
  • Reduced aches and pains

These reports do not establish that the drugs reverse aging. They come from a small, non-blinded group, and the source material does not describe a control group or published clinical findings.

Cook said he initially had no confidence that the combination would work because it consists of two generic drugs that are not normally considered longevity treatments. After taking it, however, he reported mental clarity and said others described broader improvements. He also acknowledged that he does not understand the mechanism and has more questions than answers.

The established science behind the idea

The proposal draws credibility from Conboy’s long research career at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work examined how blood-borne signals affect aging and tissue repair.

In a widely cited 2005 experiment, Conboy and colleagues surgically connected the circulatory systems of young and aged mice, a procedure known as parabiosis or heterochronic blood exchange. The older mice showed substantially improved healing after injury. This helped establish that molecules circulating in young blood can influence regenerative functions in older animals.

Research also showed the opposite effect: Plasma from aged mice can negatively affect younger animals. Conboy has summarized this relationship by saying that “old blood dominates,” suggesting that suppressing harmful age-associated signals may be at least as important as adding youthful ones.

In 2020, Conboy pursued that idea by removing plasma from old animals and replacing it with a neutral mixture of albumin and salt water. The intervention produced stronger rejuvenating effects than exposure to young blood. Human volunteers later underwent a procedure in which almost half of their blood volume was removed and discarded.

The research helped generate interest in therapeutic plasma exchange as a possible wellness intervention. Some longevity clinics now offer the procedure for as much as $10,000 per session, although the existence of those services does not prove that plasma exchange reverses human aging.

How the drug combination was identified

Conboy joined Generation Lab full time after retiring from Berkeley by the end of 2025. The startup had already been selling an aging diagnostic test, but she continued searching for a pharmaceutical alternative to plasma exchange.

Her screening system uses human cells in a microfluidic device and exposes them to serum from older people. Researchers can then test whether individual molecules or combinations prevent the cells from taking on age-associated characteristics.

Conboy says this platform led to the two-drug combination behind 1 Generation. According to the company’s theory, one part of the treatment encourages regeneration while the other counters damaging factors circulating in older blood.

That explanation remains difficult to assess independently because Generation Lab has not disclosed the drugs. Su said confidentiality is intended to prevent competitors from copying the combination. The company does not own the underlying molecules and plans to pursue an FDA pathway that could provide a limited period of exclusivity if an existing drug combination is proven to have a new use.

Clinical evidence and oversight remain key concerns

Generation Lab plans to conduct a larger study involving at least 100 participants. The company will sponsor that trial, and participation will be free, although people may separately pay a doctor to receive the treatment outside the study.

The proposed research will involve longevity physicians, including Cook, founder of the BioReset Medical clinic network, and Jeffrey Gladden, whose Texas clinic is also expected to participate. Gladden described himself as both skeptical and optimistic, citing Conboy’s previous scientific work while acknowledging that the treatment’s performance in people is unknown.

There are reasons for caution about the clinical network. Cook’s clinics offer interventions characterized in the source as unproven, including stem-cell injections. A 2021 report also said he had recommended COVID-19 treatments designated as fraudulent by the FDA, including inhaled amniotic fluid delivered through a nebulizer.

More broadly, offering access before strong trial evidence is available raises questions about how benefits, adverse effects and expectations will be managed. Identifying the drugs, publishing a study design and producing controlled clinical data would make the claim easier to scrutinize.

A scientifically grounded idea still needs proof

Generation Lab’s proposal is more substantial than a typical unsupported antiaging pitch because it builds on Conboy’s recognized animal research and a laboratory screening platform. But evidence that blood-borne factors affect aging in mice does not demonstrate that an undisclosed two-drug injection can safely rejuvenate people.

Interest from scientists, investors, doctors and biohackers does not replace clinical validation. Until the ingredients are disclosed and controlled human results are available, 1 Generation remains an intriguing but unproven longevity treatment.
