Bill Gates warns that AI guardrails are lagging
In a separate interview, philanthropist and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates said he has become increasingly concerned about the speed of AI development. In his view, protections are not advancing quickly enough to match the technology’s capabilities.
“We’ve crossed the threshold in terms of [AI’s] bio-capabilities, cyber-capabilities, psychosocial capabilities, job-market-destruction capabilities, and even the lack of control,” Gates said. “I’m just stunned at the lack of concern and discussion outside of the industry.”

A separate warning from synthetic biology
AI is not the only emerging technology prompting researchers to reconsider potential dangers. In 2019, scientists proposed creating “mirror” bacteria whose proteins and sugars would be reversed versions of those found in nature. Researchers hoped such organisms could provide insights into cell construction, drug design and the origins of life.
Some of the scientists involved have since changed their position. They now fear that mirror organisms could cause a catastrophic event threatening every form of life. The reversal illustrates a broader challenge shared by AI and biotechnology: exciting research can move faster than society’s ability to understand or contain its consequences.
